Illicit Ghost Makes Us Want to Join Her Party

Brooklyn-based artist/producer/violinist, Illicit Ghost charges into 2019 with "Parties by Myself" (released 1/28/19 via AWAL), her boldest statement to date. In this head-nodding anti-social anthem, Ghost combines a remarkably raw vocal performance, dirty bass, hip-hop machine drums, and ominous synths with her signature aggressive violin sound. "'Parties by Myself' is simply about not trying to fit in, not taking shit from anyone, and doing what makes you happy,” says Illicit Ghost. “I think the new year is perfect timing for this message.”

The hard-hitting chorus made “Parties by Myself” an instant crowd pleaser since Ghost began performing the song last year.

“The production ended up like a mix of Tove Lo with the openness of Vivaldi’s ‘La Primavera,’ and the vocals are a little bit like Lou Reed when he sings ‘Vicious.’”

Inspiration for the song came from an unlikely place. “I used to listen to Third Eye Blind’s ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ constantly when I was 12.”, explains Illicit Ghost. “I had a Third Eye Blind cassette that I was not allowed to listen to because it was about sex and drugs. But I loved that song so much that I got a small tape player and listened underneath my covers each night. At the time, I didn’t understand what it was about at all, but I liked the feeling I got from it. I felt free. I wanted to make something that captured the same feeling.”

Ghost first appeared on the scene in 2018 with the deeply personal and empowering "Drunk and Alone" hailed by The Girls at the Rock Show as “hauntingly beautiful”, “dark and poetic” by The New Nine, “refreshing” by When The Horn Blows, and “music with substance that carries an unstoppable feeling” by NXTSTYLE.

Illicit Ghost then flexed her production chops for us in her completely re-imagined cover of Pink Floyd's “Money”, revealing: "My music has a lot of different sides to it. I’d also like people to get a better sense of my production, as I did this one on my own.”

Illicit Ghost looks forward to a prolific and active year in 2019, with more music and regular live performances in store.
